Done Hysterectomy. Weight Gain, Upset Stomach. Recommended Estrogen Without Progesterone Dose?

I had a complete hysterectomy 10 yrs ago and have been taking generic estratest hs. It has been great but now they are not making that drug anymore. My family doctor put me on prefest-combination of estrogen and progesterone but it is in my understanding that I don't need the progesterone because I don't have any ovaries. I am 5'7 , 127 lbs. but I feel like I am gaining weight and my stomach is always upset at night. What is a recommended estrogen that I can take without the progesterone.

Help,
Kristy

Hello,
You are right that after hysterectomy only estrogens are given as HRT ( hormone replacement therapy ) instead of a estrogen and progesterone combination, which is basically given to prevent you from uterine cancers.
But since uterus is no more there, hence only estrogens are given except in one condition and that is if extensive endometriosis is found at the time of surgery.
Estrogen progesterone combination is given,in hysterectomy cases,if you have endometriosis.
As far as estrogen preparations are concerned, there are plenty of them available which range from daily tablet, daily gel application, weekly or bi weekly transdermal patch or even 6 monthly implants.
You will have to discuss about these with your treating doctor.
Daily oral estrogen preparations available are,Premarin,Ogen etc
Thanks

Hello,
You were operated (hysterectomy + Bilateral oophorectomy) 10 years back. So far you were taking generic estratest. Now you are put on prefest-a combination of estrogen and progesterone. You have a doubt about the intake of progesterone.
The ovary produces estrogen, progesterone and some amount of testosterone.
All these 3 hormones play a major role in the sexual arousal, lubrication, menstrual cycle and reproduction + extra genital vital functions.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) depends upon
1) Bilateral oophorectomy alone
2) Hysterectomy + Bilateral oophorectomy
3) Age of surgery
4) Natural menopause.
For you Bilateral oophorectomy (surgical menopause) + hysterectomy is done. The advised HRT should be for a short period, depending upon the need for the hormone - for other functions. So the age is very important.
Regarding HRT therapy whether estrogen alone or combined with progesterone and how long, your Dr has to come to a conclusion. So the HRT is as per your need.
Best wishes
