Does Vitamin D Deficiency In Diabetics Cause Medical Complications?

I have a vitamin D difiencieny and white cells in my urine. My doctor has sent the urine away for a culture and told me not to worry. I am also a diabetic, type 2. What could this mean? To the two tie together? I am now taking 50,000 units of D once a week.

Hello there,
Vitamin D deficiency is being noticed very frequently in Indians in contrast to popular belief that we are more exposed to sun. You are doing right by taking Vit D Supplements. Diabetes is lifestyle disorder and no proven link between diabetes and Vit D deficiency although research is on and there are studies which show that vit D deficiency may increase the risk of diabetes. In your case if you take the supplements regularly as prescribed by your physician you wont have any complications from having Diabetes and Vit D deficiency together.
Take your diabetes medicines on time and check your sugars regularly. Also Vit D supplements maybe needed for prolonged periods to avoid any bone weakness and many other problems that Vit D deficiency is being recently linked with.
Urine culture is required to guide therapy in cases of urinary infection so I think your doctor is right in telling you not to worry.
Do follow up with your physician who can guide you better after seeing the reports.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
