Does Very Low Haemoglobin Cause Severe Acne?

does very low haemoglobin cause severe acne? I'm 42, on lithium, and have been quite low in iron for most of my life (microcytic anemia) and need transfusions about once a year. My normal is 90, and when I am below 80 (70s or less) I get very bad cycstic acne. I also have Familial Mediterranean Fever. I'm about 140 pounds.

Hello,

I can understand your concern for severe acne and related cause of low hemoglobin as a causative factor.

After reviewing your query I can get that you are on lithium and you had microcytic anemia too.

Lithium is known to produce acneform eruptions and if the level of lithium goes higher then one can can get more severe acne.

I can correlate from your query that whensoever you get microcytic anemia in form of low hemoglobin then you have these severe acne.

I suggest you to meet your family physician and adjust the dose of lithium accordingly.

All the best.
