Does Taking Probiotic Cause Foul Smelling Gas?

I have suddenly had very foul smelling gas. I take a probiotic daily and am not constipated. I m 59 and post menopausal. Could this be caused by bacteria? If so what type of antibiotic may help? I have some macro bid on hand for travel (bladder infections).

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The intake of probiotic can give foul-smelling gas in some instances.

Addition of macrobid antibiotic will hamper the issue more and strongly not recommended.

Instead, stop the further intake of current medication and consult after 48 hours, till that time, drink more water and consume soft, easily digestible foodstuffs with avoidance of spices, non-veg, junk foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
