Does Taking Saaz During Pregnancy Harm The Fetus?

My wife is pregnant and carrying 3 months baby She is taking saaz ds 2 times Doctor told to reduce dose last week and she did it But in morning heavy steepness in back is happening and unable to sleep in early morning properly Now she has started saaz ds from tomorrow Pls let us know what effect will it have on baby

Hello. It is so hard to go through all of these extra medications when your child is on board to meet you!

Sulfasalazine, saaz is a category B drug during pregnancy. Meaning animal studies have failed to show any risk to fetal development(=SAFE) and inadequate human experiments have revealed no risk to fetal growth. In layman terms this drug is not going to affect your child in the womb, ~80% of the times. It is adviced to take a multivitamin tablet and folic acid along with saaz so that the risks are minimised further. Happy Parenting!
