Does Taking Effexor Cause Difficulty In Sleeping?

I am a 69 year old male who had a full rotater cuff repair surgery in Jan. this year. At the time I was on tramadol 300 mg once a day for chronic foot pain and effexer 75 mg once a day. I was given hydrocodeine for the pain. I had trouble getting any sleep and lost 25 lbs. I was then diagnosed with serotonin overload on feb. 14 and removed from all the above meds and placed on cyproheptadine 4 mg. twice a day along with Lorazepam 1 mg twice a day. Within a week I improved greatly but then became depressed and weepy. I was put back on effexer 37.5 Mg once a day this past Tuesday and haven t been able to sleep more than a couple hours a night since. My regular doctor is out of town until the 28th. Should I try stopping the effexer and going back on the cyproheptadine?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi.

I understand your concern.

Effexor can not lead to sleep problems and if you have then shift to morning dose is advisable.Take your doctor advise before make any change.

Effexor and cyproheptidine are different molecules with different actions. Cyproheptidine can help you to get good sleep. It can be taken togather if needed.

There are other medicines if you have insomnia. Detail psychological evaluation will be useful to identify underlying psychological stress and illness.

Consult psychiatrist before taking any medicine.
Consult and get help.
I hope I have answered your question.

Thank you.
