Does Switching From Metoprolol To Norvasc Cause Any Complication?

My wife just got switched to Norvasc 5 mg once a day from metropolol succinate 25 mg. She just was released after a bout with pneoumonia and infection. Norvasc was just started. She has been on Metopolol for years. Should I be concerned of any reactions that may cause further problems. She is in advance stage COPD and uses oxygen 24/7. her blood pressure was high during her stay but we attribute it to the extremely high steroids she was under. she was sent home to titrate starting at 40 mg.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In patients with COPD for blood pressure, we do not prefer metoprolol (beta blocker) for BP control as it can cause some lung congestion. So it's better to change to sofvasc.

However, it necessary that beta blockers (Metoprolol) should not be stopped abruptly. it should be tapered in a few weeks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
