Does Spleen Removal Cause Acne In Skin?

My son was in a quad bike accident and his spleen ruptured. They had to remove it in surgery. It has been 3 months and he has a very bad outbreak of acne on his skin. Is this related to the spleen being removed? Also, is drinking alcohol bad for him with no spleen?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

Spleen removal has nothing to do with acne.
Most likely his acne flare is due to recent stressful event of involvement in an accident and subsequent surgery.
I suggest that he uses topical antiacne antibacterials like clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide, over active acne lesions, once or twice daily
Oral antiacne antibiotics like doxycycline may also be started if his acne flare is severe enough.
I suggest that he visits a dermatologist for an assessment of the severity of acne and appropriate treatment.
Alcohol is mainly metabolized in liver and therefore has no direct effect in patients who had undergone splenectomy.
However, regular alcohol intake weakens the immune system and therefore may make an individual more prone to infections which can be more dangerous in splenectomy patients.
