Does Smoking Marijuana Affect Pregnancy?

I am 27 weeks pregnant and have been smoking Marijuana. I started doing it because of my nausea and heart burn... it helped. I noticed that when I don t do it I can t eat and I am extremely nauseous. Also my headaches are worse and more frequent. I have not been doing it for 2 days now and I am suffering. Is there anything I can do. i plan on breastfeeding and I know I don t want to give my baby contaminated milk. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear future mother! Yes, smoking marijuana during pregnancy may affect your baby’s growth and the development of his/her nervous system. In general, children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy may have problems with short term memory, concentration, judgment, and may have problems focusing their attention and solving their problems. Marijuana is not safe in pregnancy. If you smoke marijuana and breastfeed, the active chemical in marijuana is passed to your baby through milk. I would advice a nursing mom to abstain from marijuana while breastfeeding. I suggest you to talk to your doctor for other treatment options for your nausea and hurt burn during pregnancy. I hope I answered your question. Have a safe and wonderful pregnancy!
