Does Right Ear Odor With Fluid Discharge Need Medical Attention?

I m 22, 5 5 , 180 lbs, I have no major health problems, am on medication for acid reflux and hypothyroidism, and I smoke about a half a pack or less a day and no known allergies. About a month ago I had smelly fluid from both ears and blood from the left. Went to the doctor, she told me I had a severe infection and ruptured eardrum in the left ear, but the right ear was fine. Got antibiotics, now left ear is fine. Still have fluid from right ear regularly, smells, but absolutely no pain or itching. Should I still go back to the doctor? Or is there anything I can do to make it smell better and quit draining?

Hi,

Yes, you need to be seen by your doctor again. Based on the history you seem to have developed suppurative otitis media (pus discharge from the middle ear infection). You need to have a culture and sensitivity test of the discharging fluid from the right ear and based on the report your doctor will prescribe a course of suitable antibiotic to eradicate the infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
