Does Polio Affect The Central Nervous System?

I had Polio when I was about 5, back in around 1951, and it effected my RIGHT LEG - making the muscles weak, AND stunting its growth - it is smaller, AND shorter. I have had to have BUILT UP SHOES. Also, some years later, when I was around 14, the doctor operated, and TRANSPLANTED some of the muscles in my right foot. At THAT time, I think they thought that Polio effects the MUSCLES, but, as I understand it, Polio effects the NEUROLOGICAL SYSTEM. Is that correct?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, greetings! Thanks for posting your query. Yes, Polio affects the nervous system, mainly, cells of the spinal column. The muscles affected are due to the paralysis after infection in the spinal column. The polio virus doesn't affect the muscles directly.
