Does Pacemaker Helps 77 Year Old When Upper Chambers Are Not Working?

My mother is 77 and has had a pacemaker for 6 years. She lost her father and 3 other siblings to heart problems. Her battery has been changed twice already because it is working so hard. Last year the doctor wanted to put in a 3rd wire but there wasn t enough room so we have just the 2.Last week we were told her upper chambers are no longer working after a EKG was ran.We just had a 9 day hospital stay with pneumonia and CHF. Can you tell me what to expect from this point. Can the pacemaker keep her going or will the heart just keep getting weaker till the end.

Hello! Thank you for asking on HCM! Regarding your concern, I would explain that pacemaker is helpful even if the patient suffers from atrial arrhythmia, such as atrial fibrillation. So don't worry! Pacemaker will still keep working properly. The only issue that should be clarified is to modify pacemaker settings in accordance with the new clinical background. You just need to talk with her doctor, regarding these issues. Remember that pacemaker is an appropriate solution for certain heart conductance disorders. It doesn't help to improve CHF and any other concomitant abnormalities. So you need to talk with the attending physician for properly treating these issues.
Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings! Dr. Iliri
