Does Numb And Tender Finger With Blood Clot Under The Nail Suggest Infection?

My son smashed his finger in a door Saturday. It was swollen and he poked,a hole in his nail to drain it. It is still tender and when it is cold it feels numb. The nail looks like there is blood under it. Could he have an infection and should he go to the doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there, there are chances of it getting infected as it was poked using an un sterile foreign object, but infection wil be associated with local rise in temperature edema of sorrounding tissue and redness along with tenderness. Clot under finger nail causes inflammation, which also produces similar effects, hence its better to take a course of antibiotics and visit a doctor and get the blood clot under finger nail drained. Hope my advice helped you.
