Does Nasal Spray Help To Treat Fluid In Eardrum?

After a flight my mother experienced ear issues. The ENT noted she had fluid in her eardrum. Yesterday he gave her nose spray which he communicated probably wouldn't help. In two weeks he wants her to return to his office and if condition is still present he wants to drill a hole in her eardrum to release the water. Is this normal treatment? No antibotics provided just nasal spray.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that due to flight there has been barotrauma to her ears and due to pressure difference there is accumulation of fluid behind the eardrums..
Many a times the fluid dissipates gradually on its own..
But in case if it does not resolve then conservative treatment of removing fluid seems to be decongestants like oral decongestants as well as Decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline..
In case if there is no improvement then drainage of fluid by making a small incision in the eardrum can help..
At times Pressure Equalization Tubes can be put in ear and it will help in maintaining pressure across the eardrum as well as ease in draining the fluid..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
