Does Long Term Intake Of Suboxone Cause Liver Cirrhosis?

Can suboxone cause cirrhosis of the liver? I had a liver transplant 31 yrs. ago with no problems until two years ago when doctors, whom I ve been seeing on a regular basis, diagnosed me with reoccurring cirrhosis . I was on methadone for twenty years when a changed over to suboxone five years ago. I currently take cyclosporine, lumidivine, and the suboxone. We are talking the transplantation if it comes to that, but if suboxone is the culprit I m thinking of getting off it My next doc. appt. isn t until May. I d like to hear something before then? Thank you!! P.s I don t drink and hepatitis B has been negitive with the Lumidivine.

Hello,

Hepatotoxicity is poorly documented with the use of Suboxone (Buprenorphine HCL & Naloxone HCL) in prescribed dosage by a doctor.

Suboxone abuse causes liver damage. Suboxone needs to be withdrawn if hepatitis B is reported as it may cause mild to severe liver damage.

You ought to inform your treating doctor & get a follow-up physical examination & investigations done before stopping any medicine.

Lamivudine (used to treat Hepatitis B) is a very rare cause of clinically apparent drug-induced liver damage. It may cause flares of hepatitis B during therapy or abrupt withdrawal.

Since you are being diagnosed with reoccurring cirrhosis, you need to be very careful about your diet. Take adequate sleep.

Stay away from spicy oily food, take boiled homemade food, cut of protein intake (red meat, etc), take food that is easily digestible, stay well hydrated. Take fruits, berries, veggies. Avoid refined flour & packaged food.

Stay away from stress & addictions (alcohol, nicotine, etc). Stay connected to your treating doctor so that you may get medical aid whenever you need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
