Does Intake Of Birth Control Pills Cause Gallstones?
My daughter was taking this birth control pill and a healthy 28 year old who never has had any illnesses or surgery. This past weekend we receive a shock after having stomach pain which she thought was food poisoning an ultra sound revealed that she had gall stones. We were in a state of panic and shock she had to have her gall bladder removed. She goes for her postop on this Monday. There has to be a link to this birth control pill now as her mother I am so confused as to how to advise her other than a discussion with her obgyn since she is a newly wed and not ready to start a family what advice would you give us.

Yes intake of birth control pills has slight risk of cause gallstones in patients who has other risk factors. Excess estrogen in combined hormone birth control pills, appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement which can lead to gallstones. However alone usage of combined hormone birth control pill cannot be claimed to cause gall stones in your daughter.
As she is now suffering from gallstones usage of birth control pills is not advised. Other methods of contraception( IUD, condoms) should be considered.
