Does Immunization With Hepatitis B Vaccine Show Positive Test Result?

A client had a positive hepatitis B surface antigen drawn one day after being immunized with the hepatitis B vaccine. I understand that the immunization can cause the test to be positive even if the person is not infected. Could you tell me where the documentation for this information is to be found?

Thanks for putting up your query at HealthCareMagic. A person recently immunised with Hepatitis B vaccine will test positive for hepatitis B surface antigen. The documentation can be found in the following indexed journal references:
* Rysgaard, Carolyn D; Morris, Cory S; Drees, Denny; Bebber, Tami; Davis, Scott R; Kulhavy, Jeff; Krasowski, Matthew D. "Positive hepatitis B surface antigen tests due to recent vaccination: a persistent problem". BMC Clinical Pathology 12 (1): 15. doi:10.1186/1472-6890-12-15. http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-6890/12/15
* Janzen, L; Minuk, GY; Fast, M; Bernstein, KN (1996 Aug). "Vaccine-induced hepatitis B surface antigen positivity in adult hemodialysis patients: incidental and surveillance data.". Journal of the American Society of Nephrology : JASN 7 (8): 1228–34. PMID 8866417. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8866417
* Dow, BC; Yates, P; Galea, G; Munro, H; Buchanan, I; Ferguson, K (2002 Jan). "Hepatitis B vaccinees may be mistaken for confirmed hepatitis B surface antigen-positive blood donors.". Vox sanguinis 82 (1): 15–7. PMID 11856462. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11856462

I hope that would help. Feel free to revert back with further queries if any.

HBsAg positivity can occur in patients who have recent HBV vaccination. But it usually does not persists beyond 2-3 weeks . Source :_http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/777228
