Does High Blood Pressure Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

Can high blood pressure effect a mans ability to get or maintain an erection or can high blood pressure cause a mans erect penis length to change? I am sixty seven years old and not sure if I should see a doctor about my concerns. I have been checking my blood pressure one or twice a week and it stays between stage one and stage three hypertension measurement. I do not have a doctor at this time. I think my health is pretty good other wise. Thanks Dave.

Hello and welcome to HealthcareMagic

Yes, high blood pressure, now defined as 130/80,
can affect a man's ability to achieve a full erection.

I understand that you may think your health and heart are in great shape, but high blood pressure can be a silent killer and you are already seeing some of it's effects on your body with erectile issues.

If you were my patient with high blood pressure I would consult with you on limiting sodium intake to less than 2400 mg per day by following the DASH diet guidelines, in increasing aerobic activity,
and, depending on your pressure, possibly medication.

Please followup with your personal physician to get additional insight on how to protect your heart by treatment of this hypertension and, thus, possibly regaining optimal erectile function.

Regards, Kathryn Shattler, BS, MS,RDN
