Does High Melatonin Dosage Cause Diarrhea?

I have trouble sleeping so I am taking 3mg of Melatonin. Three and a half months ago I had total knee replacement and was having lots of nerve shocks. Dr. started me on gabapentin for these shocks as they were interfering with my sleep. I have been on them for a month, continuing. switched to 5mg melatonin less than a week ago for time release. Have been having diarrhea, mild, about the last five days. Increase of melatonin the cause. and/or should I be revising these two meds?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, Melatonin can cause diarrhea in rare cases. I recommend you talk to your doctor about a possible medication replacement or dose adjusting. In the mean time, make sure you increase fluid intake to replace the once you have lost.

I hope this answers your question.

Take care!
