Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a huge hiatal hernia. I have been told in the past by my physician and others that it needs fixing. I would like to know more about the surgery and after effects. I have recently been hospitalized and on my chest x-ray it showed it was covering my lung. They thought I had pnuemonia. Looking at the side view it was just viral bronchitis. Anything I should be concerned about?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The large hiatal hernia is a major concern. I know that is a major surgery but since you say you have bronchitis, it could be due to the reflux and the airway would have been reactive to cause bronchitis over years.
Since the pathology has been already started, it doesn't take much time to worsen. Even though you treat bronchitis, it won't give permanent cure. For that, you need to either go for surgery or do plan a different lifestyle.
Here are few things you can do such as eat smaller meals 6 to 8 times daily to avoid reflux. Don't sleep 2 hours of food intake. Don't eat any solid food after 8 p.m. but only juices or fruits.
Take good food, not spicy nor more oily food. Sleep in 30-degree head end elevation position which solves 70% of your problems.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Archana
