Does Having A Hernia Surgery Help Relieve GERD?

I have started having abdominal pain, gas and bloating on omeprazole for GERD. I have a hiatal hernia. I have seen a nurse practioner who increased my omeprazole. This made it worse. I am waiting to be scheduled for an endoscopy. While I wait per order of a nurse at the gastrology office, I am trying to find an antacid that doesn t have side effects I can t tolerate that my insurance will pay for. I have stopped taking omeprazole. Any PPI affects me the same. H2 blocker dries my eyes out too much (I have dry eye anyway). I also had headaches. I have to watch my salt intake because of pulmonary hypertension. Calcium carbonate is causing fluid retention. Do you have any suggestions? And would having my hernia fixed rid me of GERD? Thanks for your input.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
Since you are a known patient of hiatal hernia with GERD but allergic to PPI and H2 blockers also, it is a difficult situation and you have associated Pulmonary hypertension and other problems like dry eyes too.
Hence I would advise you the following with explanation:
GERD is Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease meaning there is reflux of the stomach contents back into the esophagus which does not occur in a normal situation.
Try Domperidone or any other Motility regulator so the the reflux is reduced and you can take any antacid in the liquids form whichever suits you the best.
This should solve your symptomatic problems.
Also you can try Famotidine to see if it suits.
Yes, Hiatal Hernia Surgery can help to relieve the symptoms in selected patients which is as per the findings of upper GI Endoscopy and Barium studies. Discuss in detail the pron and cons of hiatal hernia surgery and you may also need some anti-reflux measures/surgery. Go ahead with surgery only if you are convinced about the effectiveness.
