Does Fibroids Cause Bulky Uterus?

I went to the doctor today and was told I had prolapse at front and back after a vaginal internal, they also felt my abdominal and said I had a bulky womb/ uterus (not sure) so have ordered a scan, they said this would be fibroids but I don t have bad bleeding but do suffer with leg and back ache, should I b concerned as could this be anything else And is it likely to require surgery?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood the concern. Firstly, further management can be planned after the sonogram of the pelvis, preferably done in the trans-vaginal route. It is always not necessary for uterine fibroids to be symptomatic; majority of them are detected in a sonogram. They can result in a bulky uterus if they are of a substantial size, especially when intramural and sub-endometrial or sub-mucus. The pulling effect on the supporting ligaments of the uterus could be causing the referred pain to the back and the leg. You should, however, refer this to your consultant for further attention as there could be other causes too. The mode of treatment is dependent on the degree of prolapse, the accompanying discomfort, your age and reproductive need, the size and location of the fibroids, any complications etc. Surgery is not always necessary. Hope this helps.
