Does Double Benadryl Dosage Cause Excessive Sleeping In A Toddler?

Hi, my son is 3yrs old. He s been suffering from a runny nose and slight cough. I gave him a 5ml dose of Benadryl after I picked him up from the baby sitter s. He fell asleep about an hour afterwards and hasn t woken up for more than 20 minutes since then. I m afraid the baby sitter may have given him medicine as well before I picked him up and now he has a double dose of the medicine in his system. I m concerned because he s been in a heavy sleep for so long.

Hi,
Benadryl 5ml isn't recommended for children under 12 years to treat cough. A running nose has to be caused by an allergic reaction for Benadryl to work. In the case of a diagnosed allergic reaction, it is recommended to not exceed 3 doses of the medicine in a 24-hour time. So your child is safe. The reason why your son is fast asleep is because drowsiness and sedation are frequently reported side effects of Benadryl. This is also the reason why patients taking Benadryl are warned against driving while taking this drug.
