Does Confused Dosage Of Isosorbide Cause Recurring Headaches?

I take Isosorbide min tab 30 mg er once a day. I have been taking them for 3 and 1/2 years. For 7 days, I mistakenly took 2 tablets instead of one and have a headache for the past 5 days. When I returned home from vacation which was 3 days ago, I went back to taking just 1 tablet. The headaches have been reduced, but have yet to be completely eliminated. Please advise

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
Isosorbide mononitrate is in a group of drugs called 'nitrates'.
It dilates (widens) blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them and easier for the heart to pump.
Isosorbide mononitrate is used to prevent angina attacks.
Commonly reported side effects of isosorbide mononitrate is headache.
Since you have taken it double the dose, it is quite natural that headache what you are experiencing is side effect of it.
Kindly drink good quantities of water and fluids so that you can flush out the drug and its metabolites from the body as early as possible, which should give you relief from headache.
Be careful next time not to take any medication other than the recommended dose.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
