Does An Aranesp Shot Cause Severe Fatigue And Swelling In The Legs?

My 50 year old daughter suffering liver damage (cirrhosis), (18, down from 28), kidney failure with dialysis (it doesn’t help her, urine is dark and scant), she is semi-conscious, after an injection of aranesp, for newly diagnosed MDS. Extreme fatigue, jaundice, swollen legs and abdomen, etc. Can these symptoms be a result of the aranesp injection, please? Doctors have given up hope; hematologist says she is near death. No transplant hope, due to her depleted kidneys. She did not have these organ failures prior to the aranesp.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sorry to hear about his poor health. In fact, the symptoms you described may better be explained by his primary diseases, i.e. liver failure. It can give swelling of the abdomen and legs. On top of that, the renal failure is another big contributor. The injection given may have some adverse effects, especially flue like symptoms may occur with this but that's not serious and heals itself.

I understand that the problem is more because of his own disease rather than the drug. However, you should talk to the doctor if the injection causes any problem. In the context of liver cirrhosis and renal failure, the outlook, unfortunately, doesn't look good if she is not a candidate for transplant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
