Does Alcohol Consumption After Rabies Postexposure Prophylaxis Cause Any Complications?

Hi, Im currently on 5 dose post exposure vaccination against rabies. Bitten by a dog in Peru. Im met the owner at the time but was not aware I needed to ask if the dog had been vaccinated. Due to this was put on the 5 dose regime.. On the back of a card given by the hospital says not to drink alcohol until 2 days after the whole treatment is over. Is this strictly necessary? Does drinking alcohol reduce the chance you will build immunity or is it because of drug interactions? Regards

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is not compulsory to stop alcohol during rabies vaccination. Occasional social drinking can be done. Alcohol will not interact with vaccine effectiveness. But it's advisable not to take alcohol for 5-6 days as excess alcohol consumption can affect central nervous system.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
