Does Vyvanse Cause Sleeplessness?

my friend used to be prescribed 90 mgs of vyvanse and we he got to college others were taking it as well and he realize that it wasn t normal. He stopped taking it and since then he can only sleep a total of 3-4 hours every four days, not consecutively. I think it messed with his circadian rythm. When he tried to go to the doctors they just gave him ambian or other sleep medicine that he didn t like the side effects of. What can he do to sleep longer? He drinks to oblivion to try and sleep and smokes pot. I m worried.

Hello ,
Welcome to healthcaremagic.com and thanks for sharing your concern with us .
Vyvanse is a nervous system stimulant and insomnia and irritability are its major side effects . If the symptoms of sleeplessness started after using vyvanse then discontinuation of it should resolve the issue , and I don't recommend to take any sleep medicine . First should try lifestyle modifications which in most of the cases resolves such side effects .
I would suggest him to go to bed at same time everyday which will help in having a good sleep and will balance the circadian rhythm .
Exercise regularly atleast 5 days a week which can include brisk walking for 45 minutes or jogging and other aerobics .
Eat a healthy diet full of veggies and fruits with sea food , fish and white meat like chicken .
Sleep in dark and in morning try to sit in day light for 5 to 15 minutes to recorrect your body clock .
Avoid smoking and alcohol .
Don't watch tv atleast 2 hour before going to bed .
Avoid anything which can distract you in sleep .
Don't eat just before sleep , Dinner should be atleast 2 hour before going to sleep .
Don't take naps in day time .
Practice deep breathing exercises for relaxation .
I would again inform you that in your case it looks that these sleep related changes are side effects of drugs and you don't need to take another medicine to come out of it and should follow life style modifications which will definitely be enough to come out of it .
As you want to discontinue any medicine , you should inform your healthcare providers about it .
Best Regards ,
