Does Valparin Cause Adverse Side Effects In The Long Run?

My son suffered seizure disorder (as doctor told based on our description about my son s sudden senseless condition) once on 14.2.16 afternoon. On 13.02.2016 he played excessively in the field and the day was extremely hot and the temperature change was suddenly after cold. Moreover, that day taking food and sleep was not in order means taken more oily food and less sleep. As per doctor advised we done EGG and MRI and doctor said no problem. But advised to take 500mg Valporin twice daily. He is taking it last 30 days. I am worried about side effect of continuously taking Vaporin 500mg. Is it right to continue the same medication for long time?

I can understand your concern of continuing a medication for a long time for your son as the side effects might be bothersome. Actually, no patient of seizures has died due to taking long term medicines for it while patients have died due to seizures who were not taking medicines. The chance of dying in motor vehicle accident is higher than by having medicines for seizure disorder. What I intend to explain is, the benefits of this medicine for your son outweigh the side effects. Also, as soon as the doctor will judge that your son does not these medicines anymore, they will be stopped and side effects will disappear, too.

The very severe side effects due to long term use of Valproic Acid are rare. The common side effects are not worrisome. So unless your son experiences infection, peeling of skin, serious bleeding or other adverse effect that is debilitating, then the doctor should be consulted and options can be considered for alternate medicine. In all other cases, taking this medicine regularly is important for your son's good health.
