Does Spironolactone Cause Weight Gain?

I have been on spironolactone for 1 year. !00 mg per day. I have gained 20 lbs. I workout 4 or 5 days a week, eat under 24 grams of sugar per day, and eat very little wheat. I can not get back to my normal weight. Is this medication to blame for my weight gain?

Hello
Spironolactone is a potent diuretics and used in many conditions ( although you didn't mention the disease for which this was advised , you also didn't mention the age ).
Anyhow , it is very difficult to blame spironolactone that it causes weight gain .
Weight gain may be due to the side effects of spironolactone or due to any disease for which it was prescribed.
Note down few side effects of spironolactone.
Fluid or electrolyte imbalance, GYNAECOMASTIA, g i upset, drowsiness, hyponatraemia, weakness, confusion, hypotension OLIGOURIA etc.
So I recommend you please consult your treating physician and get his opinion , because he knows better about your condition.
You can consult another physician for 2nd opinion.
Good luck.
