Does Prozac Cause Extreme Drowsiness?

My dad is 75. He had a stroke in December that left him paralyzed on his right side and is unable to talk or walk. He seems to be less aware and more sleepy than he was a month ago. He sleeps most all the time except he wakes to eat and go to the bathroom. I know he is depressed, of course, but is there anything else that could be causing this decrease in awareness and extreme drowsiness? could it be the prozac he started taking a week ago??

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. He is 75 years old and is bed ridden due to stroke. He is in depression and is having drowsiness. Prozac is fluoxetine and the drug is a SSRI drug. The drug usually cause insomnia and slight restlessness and in my opinion the drowsiness your dad is having is not duet o Prozac. This could be due to persisting symptoms of depression or due to his generalised debility. Get his serum electrolytes, blood urea and creatine tested to rule out any metabolic cause for his symptoms. Visit his doctor for re-evaluation if drowsiness persist or complicated into confusion or delirium.

Thanks. I hope this helps you. Take care
