Does Prednisone Cause Hair Loss And Frizzy Hair?

The hair on my scalp has gradually changed from soft and silky all my life (I am 62) to VERY frizzy, thinner, and now it has been falling out at a fast rate for the past month. I have quite a few health problems and am on many medications. W/O going into a long health history and med list, could this hair change be due to Prednisone or Humira ? If so, will it change back when I get off the medication? Will it grow back in like it did when I lost it from chemo? I ve been on 40 mg of Prednisone since the end of last year for Crohn s disease and interstial lung disease. I finally got my pulmonologist to agree to reduce it at the end of June, and now have just gone down to 15mg. I also began Humira in early June, but temporarily stopped it when I came down with a bad case of Shingles at the beginning of August. I am supposed to resume the injections tomorrow . The rash has dried up and is no longer red, but is not gone. The pain however, remains. (It really does hurt, and my skin is VERY sensitive to any kind of touch .) Do you think I should be restarting the Humira if I am still having so much pain from the shingles? I also have another related question. Thanks in advance for your time and expertise .

Hello,

Yes, oral corticosteroid if taken for long time can lead to hair and skin related changes. And these changes are reversible on reducing or stopping steroids. So don't worry, your hair will be normal once you stop steroids. About shingles pain, it is neuropathic pain. And it will remain for longer duration atleast 2-3 months. So pain should not the reason for holding Humera injection. If your rashes are dried and not red, you can definitely restart Humera injection.

Hope I have answered your query.
