Does Niacin IR Cause Liver Damage?

I want to take Niacin 500 mg (IR) because my HDL levels are low (LDL is 81 and HDL is 35). Can it damage the liver ? I am a 45 year old male. I was previously diagnosed with slightly elevated liver enzymes in the past, but the condition subsided on its own after a few months

Hi thanks for asking question.

You could have elevated liver enzymes becoz of fatty liver like condition.

And becoz of fatty liver enzymes can get elevated.Usually with dietary measurement and regular exercise fatty liver can be subside in few month.

Stopping of alcohol also can be helpful in relieving fatty liver.

As far as niacin is concerned on long term use it can induce liver damage. But dose for inducing liver damage is usually high as over 1 gm.Otherwise niacin is useful in high cholesterol level.

Niacin can induce rash, pruritus like symptoms.

I hope I have solve your query.
