Does Metformin Have Debilitating Side Effects?

Very concerned about the side effects of Metformin that my doctor has increased to 1000 mg b.i.d. Muscle pain, weakness, rapid heart rate (which was treated with cardiac ablation in 2010). Recent pain over my kidneys and upper back. Even my insurance company has sent a letter for me to take to my primary physician warning me about using Metformin saying that I am not a candidate for this med because of the other meds I am own (and they pay for the medication).
