Does Meclizine Taken For Treating Vertigo Make You Sleepy?

My friend took Meclizine 25 mg for Vertigo and she has a slightly swollen tongue and slurred speech. She fell into a very deep sleep after taking it. She is awake now but is very sleepy and tongue swelling seems to be getting better and speech is improved.. What should we do? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Meclizine can cause drowsiness, but 25 mg is not a very big dose and I wouldn't expect it to have such a strong effect on your friend. Depending on her risk factors and age, with slurred speech and dizziness I would be concerned about a possible stroke or TIA.

I would take her to be evaluated as soon as possible to make sure something more serious isn't happening.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
