Does Maidstone Cause Pneumonitis?

My 81 year old husband has justbeenreleased from hospital after having severe pneumonitis. He has been on 100 mg of Maidstone once a day for the last2 1\2 years. Can such a low dose of amiodarone cause the pneumonitis? All bacteria and fungal caused were ruled out.

Hello,

Short answer: Yes!

Detailed answer: Amiodarone has a unique characteristic: it can cause pneumonitis at any dose, even though the higher the dose and the longer the treatment takes the higher the risk of pneumonitis.

Incidence of pneumonitis increases with age and is higher in men than in women. In certain populations, daily doses of just 140 mg of amiodarone were associated with elevated rate of pneumonitis and the rate was higher among those using it for longer periods (5 years) compared to those using it for 1 or 3 years.

Therefore, pneumonitis in the case of your husband is very likely to have been due to Amiodarone, as he is a male, advanced age, he has used it for quite long time and other causes were excluded.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
