Does Magnesium Citrate Causes Any Abnormal Side Effects On The Body?

Hello. I am in my early fifties, and have always had issues with constipation. I eat a very well balanced diet, full of green vegetables, lean protein choices, and copious water. I don t drink alcohol, though I am on an anti convulsant since having had one seizure twenty years ago. I am active, strong, and fit. I ve had recently tried magnesium citrate, and have finally found some reliable relief. I ve heard so many conflicting opinions on the goodness of magnesium to its condemnation as a chronic addition to my evening routine. Is there a definitive answer? I will be asking my doctor , as I ve neglected to address this issue with her before. May I get yet one more opinion? Thanking you I advance, Cathy

It is relatively safe. It can be a problem if you are on kidney machine and the magnesium can get very high and cause problems in heart rhythm. BUT you would have a lot of other problems in that case. Most drugs to treat constipation are worse than magnesium and cause the body to get used to them and to require them to move bowels at all Also, magnesium is an essential mineral that is involved with a lot of processes and diets are gypically a bit low on it. It has anti-convulsant properties. Bottom line, doesn't seem bad. It can of course overcorrect and cause diarrhea. This is treated by taking less.
