Does Lithium Possess A Sedative Effect?

Can lithium help someone to go back to sleep at night if they wake up for a bathroom call? My brother is on 1/2 the maintenance dose a patient should be on. He wakes up every night several times and can t go back to sleep. He refuses to follow his doctors orders. Thus he is tired all day and naps during the day.

First, lithium has to be closely watched to know what the right dose is. THis varies between people and the dose that works and the dose that causes side effects (including those that cause over urination) are quite close. You cannot say if he has too much or too little without checking the blood level.
