Does Lamotrigine Cause Upper Respiratory Problems?
hi, i am taking lamotrigine 25mg tablets 1 time a day and i have been taking it for about a week or so. my question is can this medication affect asthma or upper respiratory system because I have mild asthma and the only time it acts up is when I have a severe cold or take a medication that affecting asthma or respiratory system issues are a side effect, otherwise my asthma is very maintainable but right now I am very miserable and can hardly breathe and use my inhaler as well as over the counter meds to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Suesn
Lamotrigine does not usually cause asthma exacerbation. However, there are few reported cases of hypersensitivity to Lamotrigine including the occurrence of asthma. Even so, please note that you should not discontinue Lamotrigine without consulting with your treating physician. Discuss with your doctor regarding the reason for prescribing Lamotrigine for you and whether other medications can be tried. Also, chest X-ray is recommended at this point to rule out underlying bronchitis or pneumonia. If the breathlessness is not controlled with inhaler alone, oral bronchodilators and corticosteroids should be added to the treatment regime.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
