Does Hashimoto's Disease Cause Irregular Periods?

My daughter is 19 and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Her periods are very irregular and with painful cramps. Last week she had her period and then a week off and now has started again. She is 5'8" and about 130 pounds. Is this related to her Hashimoto's? And if so, would taking thyroid medicine help? She is not currently taking any medications.Thank you!

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
I carefully read your concern about your daughter. She is diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis but you didn't mention her hormonal level. Is she hypothyroid? If yes she needs to be treated, because hypothyroidism may be one of the causes of the irregular periods and the correction of the thyroid hormonal status may resolve the problem. If she is not hypothyroid i would recommend to visit a gynecologist and check her ovaries. PCOS is a very common cause of the irregular cycle at her age.
Hope you got enough information.
