I have been taking gabapebtin for about a month because I was gaining weight on lyrics. However I have developed more depression, I forget things all the time and cannot concentrate. I even have slurred language. Could this tie into the gabapentin.

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, depression, fatigue, concentration and memory problems are highly likely side effects of gabapentin. Both lyrica (pregabalin) and gabapentin are used treat seizures and nerve pains. Depression, aggressive behavior, concentration/memory problems irritability or other mood problems are commonly reported side effect of gabapentin. It may also increase your risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. Gabapentin is cleared in the body by kidneys; therefore, if you have kidney problems drug concentration in the body may get high and cause serious side effects. Please, consult with your doctor if you feel depressed or having any thought of harming yourself, including suicide.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
