General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Folic acid is a water soluble compound belonging to B complex group of vitamins. It is also present naturally in foods such as leafy vegetables.
It performs several important functions in the body and is used as a supplement for a variety of disorders.
Folic acid is relatively safe for most people when taken by mouth or injections. Most adults do not experience any side effects when used in doses less than 1000 mcg daily.
High doses of folic acid might cause side effects like abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, sleep disorders, irritability, confusion, nausea, stomach upset, behaviour changes, skin reactions and seizures.
Since it is a water soluble vitamin, you can reduce the side effects by consuming more quantity of water or fluids. The symptoms caused are completely reversible and need not worry much about it.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
