Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My mother was just prescribed doxycycline hyclate 100 mg tablets one tablet twice daily for a total of 200 mg daily. She has a stage 3 bedsore from a deep tissue injury and bacteria levels are elevated in the wound so the doctor prescribed this. My mother is 90 years old weighing 95 lbs. and does not have a great appetite and does not drink a lot of fluids and she has dementia. Is this dosage too strong for her. Will it cause her to have severe stomach upset. Taking in protein is very important for her condition and I don't want her protein intake diminished significantly because of stomach upset. Please advise. I do have a call in to the doctor, no return call yet.

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello,
Unfortunately, Doxycycline has gastrointestinal side effects. Doxycycline is a usual dose of for the treatment of bacterial skin infections. If stomach discomfort or nausea started after taking doxycycline, it is highly likely the side effect of the medicine.
The following measures may help her to decrease or even avoid the medicine induced side effects: - She should take doxycycline with a food or just after a meal with a glass of water. She should never take it on empty stomach. And after taking the medicine she should stay upright for at least 30 mins, should not take the medicine before going to bed. - If she is taking some other medicines (pills) better avoid taking them with doxycycline at the same time.
These are easy ways to prevent nausea or stomach discomfort while taking doxycycline. Hope, this will help her.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
