Does Crestor Cause Tinnitus?

I take Crestor 5mg tablets one per day and my cholesterol is at normal levels. I suffer from tinnitus and a friend has told me that this can be a side effect of taking Crestor. Is this correct and should I ask my doctor to take me off Crestor for a trial period to see if the tinnitus improves?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Crestor contains rosuvastatin, which belongs to a a group of drugs called "statins" or HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. It is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in blood, which are lipids that are known to promote atherosclerosis.
Common side effects include:
(a) Body aches or pain, particularly muscle pain,
(b) Respiratory symptoms like congestion, dry cough, runny nose or sore throat
(c) Other effects like headache, hoarseness of voice, swollen glands in the neck, difficulty in swallowing.
Tinnitus is not a known side effect caused due to intake of this medication. It might be due to:
(a) hearing loss
(b) trauma to the ear such as loud noise
(c) cochlear damage
Kindly consult ENT specialist in this regard for appropriate evaluation and management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
