Hallow Saravanan,

I should complement your wife for taking such nice decision.

Copper T (CuT) acts by changing the intrauterine environment and thus preventing the pregnancy by means of the Copper it has in it, and also by its physical presence. So this action will be till the CuT remains inside the uterus. Once it is removed, the uterus gets ready to have the pregnancy.

However, please keep in mind that the CuT can prevent only the intrauterine pregnancy. If unfortunately, extrauterine pregnancy (ectopic) pregnancy occurs, CuT cannot prevent it.

CuT has a very good success rate, more than 98%. So please go ahead and get CuT inserted for your wife.

After and for its insertion, there are certain norms for follow up. Please follow them:
1. For first month, she should observe her underwear every time to look for spontaneous expulsion. If so, she has to report to the Gynaecologist.
2. Intermittently she has to feel for the threats of CuT to confirm that it has not been displaced. If the threads are not felt, there are three possibilities: She has failed to feel the threads in places, the CuT could have been expelled out without her notice or it could have gone inside with or without perforation of the uterus. So not feeling the thread has to be reported to the Gynaecologis.
3. In the initial few months, she may get little pain in abdomen, may be associated with heavy menses. This is because the uterus is not used to this foreign body and is trying to resist it. Subsequently it will go away. If the symptoms persist and are unbearable, occasionally the CuT has to be removed.
3. During first month, there may be little intermenstrual bleeding. Usually it stops after first menstruation.
4. This device should be inserted only if there is no tumour in the uterus nor infection in the genital tract or pelvis. After treating the infection, the device can be inserted.

I feel this much information will encouragement give you all the guidance and get it inserted for your wife.

Dear Saravanan,

I must complement your wife for taking a decision of getting Copper T (CuT) inserted for birth control. 6 months child is a very young child. Your wife should give sufficient attention to the baby and also give sufficient time for the tissues depleted of the nutrients to recover.

Next pregnancy when the first child is 2.5 years is a very good plan. So that the two children are about 3 years apart. CuT will not create any issue for her next pregnancy nor for the baby's health.

CuT acts by two ways. Copper in it changes the intra-uterine environment so that the pregnancy cannot happen. Also the presence of device keeps the uterus at unrest which does not allow the pregnancy to settle. This device can very safely be kept in the uterus for more than 3 years; so your purpose will be served.

Now there are different types of intrauterine devises available. They can be kept for much longer time. Some are hormone based also; however they are costly.

For your requirement, CuT is a good option and choice you have made is correct.

Go ahead and rare the first baby nicely with nice breastfeeding to the baby.
