Does Ciprofloxacin Help Cure Abdominal Pain?

I have been prescribed ciprofloxacin for lower stomach pains. It seems to have many frightening possible effects. What is it exactly (antibiotic, or what?) and is it reasonable to take it. My prescribing doctor is always very careful and cautious about prescribing drugs. I have Type 2 diabetes and take about 5 drugs presently (metformin, synthroid, and 3 others. I ve been told to stop the metformin for a couple of days perhaps because of taking a ct scan.
