Does Atenolol Interact With Epinephrine?

48 year old male taking 50 mg of atenolol with chlorthalidone. Seems to be controlling blood pressure well. My concern is I have a shellfish allergy and was prescribed an epi-pen. I am concerned about the atenolol reducing the effectiveness of the epinephrine in case of an emergency. Are my concerns warranted??

Hello,
No, the epi pen should work just fine. You are correct that they act in different ways. When you take the epi pen (hopefully you will not need it) it may make your blood pressure go up briefly, but epinephrine only stays in the system a few minutes. That is why they come packaged in packs of two and also why you need to go to Emergency if you ever need to take the epi pen.
