Dear Dr. My father (69yrs) got seizure 9 months back , Doctor checked and suggested to take levipil 250mg 1 tablets 3 times a day. In Nov 2013 he again had a seizure and fell down in bath room, injured in his head. Now doctor suggested to take 2 tablets in morning and night Recently 3 days back he had one more seizure while sleeping and now doctor suggested to take 2 tablets 3 times a day. so now altogether he is having 1500mg per day as dosage, in this age it is advisable to this much amount of tablet, whether it cause any side effects. Kindly advise. Thanks, Mahesh

Hello,

Levetiracetam (Levipil) is usually given in Focal-onset seizure Dose: 1000–3000 mg/d. Most antiepileptic drugs need to be introduced relatively slowly to minimize side effects.

Starting doses are usually the lowest value. Subsequent increases are made, if seizure remains uncontrolled, only after achieving a steady state with the previous dose (i.e. after an interval of five or more half-lives).

Half-live of Levetiracetam is 6–8 h. If seizures continue despite gradual increases to the maximum tolerated dose and documented compliance, then it becomes necessary to switch to another antiepileptic drug.

Your further is still with the submaximal dosage of Levetiracetam. Levetiracetam has some benefits like a broad-spectrum AED (anti-epileptic drug); no interactions with other drugs; it is effective and well tolerated in the elderly.

Side effects: irritability, depression (only in 7% of elderly people).Only Caution: dose adjustment in renal impairment as the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
