Do Varicose Veins In The Legs Cause Leg Cramps And Headaches?

Sorry this is a long explanation but I need to do this to get to what I m looking for exactly. I woke up with severe cramping in my right leg - I stood, wanting to walk it off, and started to lose consciousness. I supported myself in the hall with between the walls using my arms, sliding down as I lost use of my legs. Pain shot up into my head, but I never lost consciousness, but got a WHOPPING headache. The leg pain subsided a little but is still feels like it s edging on cramping up anytime.. this is 3 days later. My worry here is that I have large varicose veins - years ago I had shots given to me to get rid of them but my blood just burst through, then veins also rerouted through my kneecap. FINALLY - MY QUESTION! Is it a vein thing that I should go to a specialist, or muscular because it was cramping behind my knee to my groin? I m not sure if I should go to a vein specialist, or just a family doctor? I m worried about circulation, blood clots because of the failure of the first vein fix attempt so many years ago.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history about having large varicose veins wherein the injection therapy was not successful, developed severe pain in right leg/calf area going to groin, headache and has an attack of semi-consciousness.
I would advise you to go the your Primary Doctor first as a proper clinical evaluation, examination of all the problems and getting basic investigations will help your Doctor where to get referred to.
Color doppler examination of both legs will help to see for any deep venous thrombosis, the degree of varicose veins, any collection or so.
Also will be examined for headache and any other symptoms.
Once a diagnosis has been done you will be referred to the Specialists as indicated for further investigations and an appropriate management.
Tell then take full rest.
Elevate legs above heart level in laying down position.
Take a painkiller if there is any pain.
Once the diagnosis for all symptoms are done the treatment can be a specific one and most fruitful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
