I do have a question re RANGE of testosterone lebels ♂ normal Range ♀ normal Range ▼ From a friend ▼ “After watching Serena Williams win her way to the finals, I have to put aside any concern about racism and call it as I see it. I wish they tested all the women for testosterone levels and disqualified those with abnormally high readings. ” Q. Is it possible for a ♀ to have very high testosterone levels w/o medicine ?

Hi,

Normal range of Testosterone in normal adult male is 270-1070 ng/dl of blood, while this range of normal adult female is 15-70 ng/dl of blood.

In normal conditions, testosterone levels do not get higher or lower than the reference range mentioned. However, there are some disorders that can make this level go high. I can mention a few for you here.

1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): This disorder responsible for very high or shooting testosterone level is more common than others in females. It can cause irregular menstruation, excessive acne, excessive hair growth mainly on the face, infertility etc.

2. Adrenal Gland Disease: Testosterone levels are high in this disorder due to disorder of the testosterone producing hormonal gland.

3. Diabetes: Though the relationship between diabetes and high testosterone level is complex, obesity in diabetes may be the reason of the high levels of this hormone.

Other than this, there are many other disorders like dwarfism, gigantism, acromegaly, Cushing's disease, thyroid disorders etc that can cause the testosterone levels in females to rise.

I hope this information helps. Thanks for choosing HealthCareMagic.

Best,
