Do Calcium Supplements Cause Cardiovascular Disease?

I m taking a daily 750 mg tablet of Calcium that also includes 500 IU of Vitamin D3 and 40 mpg of Vitamin K. I also take a daily Centrum Silver containing 210 mg of Calcium. Recent news reports have indicated that Calcium supplements may a risk for cardiac health. Should I discontinue the Calcium supplement? Thank you for your advice.

Oncologist 's  Response
Hi,

Many people take calcium supplements to treat or prevent bone disease, such as osteoporosis. It's thought that the calcium in these supplements could make its way into fatty plaques in your arteries — a condition called atherosclerosis — causing those plaques to harden and increase your risk of heart disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Monish De, Oncologist
